Pilates Stories: Regain your balance
In this second edition of “Pilates Stories” I talk about Pierre's experience of Pilates, to give you an idea of what to expect in your first three classes.
At One Pilates, we require all students to begin with 3 private lessons, so that we can assess your body and your posture, but also so that you have a better understanding of where we are heading on your Pilates journey. We take the time to listen to your needs and understand your goals and introduce you to the principles of Pilates, so you have the fundamental foundations to start you off on the right track.
Pierre came to me as he was having a series of big accidents - mainly from losing his balance - while doing normal daily activities.
We worked on his proprioception and stability, finding his centre of gravity and realigning his axe. So where did we start? Well, his feet of course!
We need to start from a good foundation! Pierre had no articulation in his feet and no arch either. I showed him the wonderful Feet and Ankle Series that my mentor, Lolita San Miguel loves so much. We woke up his feet! This series is now a daily must for Peter, who now practices the exercises all day long at his desk, because he loves it so much.
Next we accessed his legs and his pelvis - the pillars of his foundation . We started to bring awareness into how he stands and his axe line, and this began his journey on correcting his posture and using his centre to stabilize himself. We took the time to make sure Peter understood that correctly executed exercises pattern the body and the movement.
Pierre’s first 3 classes were not the traditional way of teaching the foundations of Pilates, but our approach was the most efficient way for him to understand the power of Pilates and how it could help him directly.
The real proof is in the results - Pierre has had significantly fewer accidents. He is more confident of himself and his body, and finally feels connected to his feet!
